Cased Liebreich ophthalmoscope in a leather wallet, along with supplementary lenses. The ophthalmoscope is used for the visual examination of the interior tissues of the eye using light. Early ophthalmoscopes were introduced in Britain in the 1850s. This example dates from around 1870, England. It takes its name from its inventor, German ophthalmologist Richard Liebreich (1830-1917).
