Seawan means blackmoney, and w^as the redmans gold; it was worthtwice as much as means whitemoney, and was the redmans silver. Both kinds ofIndian money were calledwampum by the w^hite men. Wampum was made ofshell beads. These beads weremade by breaking off littlepieces from shells, polishingthem, and then boring holesthrough them with a stoneawl having a reed beads were then strungon strong thread made of thesinews of animals.
