Athens December 2008 riots - the destruction

Broken storefront of an optical shop in Akadimias street. The killing of the 15 year old boy Alexandros Grigoropoulos by a policeman resulted in widespread riots that altered the city landscape When I walked in the streets of my town the day after the riots I instantly forgot the image I had about Athens that of a bustling peaceful energetic metropolis and in my mind came the old photographs from WWII the civil war and the students uprising against the dictatorship Thus I decided not to turn my digital camera straight to the destroyed buildings but to photograph through an old camera that worked as a filter a barrier between me and the city
