(555° Fahrenheit), and the Mediterranean attains in many places a depth of up- wards of 1,500 fathoms, so that here we have the strange phenomenon of an underlying mass of water, 1,400 fathoms deep, of a uniform moderate tempera- ture ; a state of things singularly different from that which obtains at like depths in the Atlantic.
