MERCHANTS EXCHANGE BUILDING. Showing a Roebling vault, with double stetl doors, which preserved itscontents perfectly. The walls and top are of solid concrete: the studs of 2 x J/ flat steel are sjiaced 10 on centres. Roebling1 solid rod stiffened wire lath is applied to both sides of the studs, and the space between the wire surfaces is filled solidwith cinder concrete. The plaster is then applied to both sides, making a total thickness of 4 inches. The handles of thecombination lock of this vault fused, and it was impossible to open the door.
