The consequences are that thetrain receives some pretty rough handlingin trying to make the stops necessary ingetting this train over the division. If ithappens to be a train consisting largely ofmerchandise, and not much attention givento the proper loading of same, the chancesare that the freight in some cars will looklike it had been in a small cyclone when itreaches its destination. I am using this preface to show to someextent what causes so mucli trouble withthe average run of air pumps that we findon the freight engines of to-day. If the. COL0R.\D0 MIDLAND An(-BR.\KE TESTING CART AND DAY TESTING CREW. Freight Train Inspection and Air Pumps There has been a great deal said andwritten about the inspection of air brakesat terminal points lately. When a train isbroken up for the purpose of setting outand picking up loads, we all know that aterminal test is a necessity. After the engine is coupled to tlie trainand the train line is pumped up to the re-quired pressure, the brakes are applied bythe engineer, who will make a reduction ofabout 20 pounds. The inspector will makea rush for the rear end of the train, andwhen he reaches it, will give a signal torelease. Then he comes to the engine andnotifies the engineer that so many brakesare working, so many not working, and somany are piped cars. No note is made ofthe piston travel, whether it is 6 inches or matter 01 inspections were given more at-tention, we would have less
