The orange-red clay is the material with which the houses of many villages in North Africa are built. From a certain distance you can see the layers of houses, spread out on this hill. Ait-Ben-Haddou began as a fortified city, or ksar, along the caravan route between the Sahara desert and the present-day city of Marrakech in Morocco. It is located on the side of a hill along the Ouarzazate River. The Ksar is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
