In woods, New York and Pennsylvania, south along the Alleghanies and Blue Ridge to Florida and Alabama, west to central Illinois. Kentucky and Tennessee. White linn. Teil- or tile-tree. Cottonwood. Silver-leaf poplar. Wahoo. Wood weak, light brown ; weight per cubic foot 26 lbs. June-July. The European linden or lime-tree. Tilia europaea L., is planted as an ornamental tree in parks and on lawns. It may be distinguished from any of our species by the absence of scales at the base of the petals. Its name. Lin, was the origin of the family name of Linnaeus.
