The uvula can be made to disappear almost entirely bypressing a fine electrode lightly against its base. The azygosmuscle contracts and the entire uvula seems to shrink up,leaving only a small knob-like projection. The platysma myoides receives its nerve-supply from thedescending facial and the cervical plexus. In order to producecomplete contraction both electrodes must be used, one beingplaced over the cervical branch at the middle of the sterno-cleido-mastoid and the other over the branches of the facialnerve.
