The boiler barrel is com-posed of two rings, and the first of theseis conical, so that ample steam space isprovided. Three rows of Baldwin ex-pansion stays support the forward end ofthe firebox crown, and flexible bolts areused in the breakage zones in the throat,sides and back. The large boiler tubesare welded at the firebox end. In ac-cordance with the practice of the Mis-sabe road, the Seddon boiler feed ar-rangement is used. This device is theinvention of C. W. Seddon, superintend-ent of motive power of the road. Thefeed is discharged into a specially de-signed pan, in which a considerableamount of scale forming material is de-posited. This arrangement reduces theexpense of boiler maintenance on theMissabe road, and cleaner boilers havebeen the rule since it began to be used,which is about eight years ago. The steam distribution is controlled by12-in. piston valves; and
