Female sand fly (Lutzomyia longipalpis) biting a human arm with abdomen full of blood

Female sand flies transmit protozoan kinetoplastid parasites of the genus Leishmania to mammalian hosts. These parasites are the causative agents of leishmaniasis. In South America, Lutzomyia longipalpis is one of the major vectors of visceral leishmaniasis, a potentially lethal form of the disease caused by Leishmania infantum.
