Long-haired Mangalica pig sow

Long-haired Mangalica pig sow resting with its face covered with mud after foraging. A rare breed. This native Hungarian breed of pig was very popular because of its fatty meat, which made excellent sausages and bacon. Due to its low fecundity and changing consumer habits it has almost disappeared. Recent increases of organic agriculture have brought about a renaissance for this breed and its numbers are rising in the Hortobagy national park. This is a terrain for which this pig is superbly adapted.
