ELECTROSE HIGH-TENSION INSULATORS At the recent annual convention of the Canadian ElectricalAssociation, Harold W. Buck, chief electrical engineer of theCanadian Niagara Power Company, gave a description of theinsulator used on the transmission line to Fort Erie, whichline will supply current to Buffalo. The length of the line, which is of 37-strand aluminum of 500, section,is 15 miles, the voltage being 24,000. The material of the insulator which is shown in the accom-. HIGH-TENSION INSULATOR panying cut is made by Electrose Manufacturing Company,Brooklyn, N. Y. Electrose is an insulating compoundwhich has been largely used in telephone, telegraph and elec-tric railway work, and is now being employed for high-tensioninsulation. Mr. Buck states that this material is a very goodinsulator, is very strong mechanically and is entirely free fromcracks and other defects which are common in glass andporcelain. Similar insulators have been used on the Buffalotransmission lines of the Niagara Falls Power Company forthe past three years, and they are the only insulators on thoselines which have caused no trouble. Mr. Buck adds thatit is impossible to shatter Electrose insulators by stone throw-ing, and they will frequently turn a rifle bullet without beingdamaged seriously. 572 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL.
