Cavalry HE military operations against the hostile bands in theIndian Territory, were continued during the winter,and well into the spring of 1875, and at length, early inMarch, the Southern Cheyennes, completely broken down,gave up the contest, and under principal chief, Stone Calf,the whole body of that tribe, with a few trifling exceptions,surrendered themselves as prisoners of war, restoring atthe same time the two elder Germaine girls, who had beencaptives among them for nearly eight months. Althoughthe conditions of surrender required the Indians to deliverup their arms, only a few guns and a large quantity ofbows and arrows were turned in, the greater part of theirmore valuable firearms being hidden away where no searchby the troops would be likely to find them.
