A palombiere is used as a hide for counting palombes ( wild pigeons) during their migrations. The bird watcher would climb at the top of the palombiere and wait for the birds to fly pass above the woodlands. Columba palumbus (pigeon ramier) = "palombe" dans le sud-ouest de la France et également désormais dans le sud-est où l'ancienne dénomination de "biset" a pratiquement disparu.
