One, for instance,by Nicolo Alunno, in which the Virgin, a benign and digni-fied creature, stretches forth her sceptre from above, andrebukes the ugly fiend of Sin, about to seize a boy. Themother kneels on one side, with eyes uplifted, in faith andtrembling supplication. The same idea I have seen repeatedin a picture by Lanfranco. The innumerable votive pictures which represent the Ma-donna di Misericordia w^ith the Child in her arms, I shallnotice hereafter. They are in Catholic countries the usualornaments of charitable institutions and convents of the Orderof Mercy ; and have, as I cannot but think, a very THE MATER DOLOROSA. 37
