Turret on School Building, the Eckener Gymnasium in Berlin Tempelhof. Many buildings in Berlin have turrets and towers which as well as being design features, often served as firewatch towers for smoke to be seen and reported as quickly as possible in the era before phones were common. Berlin had a particular problem with house fires from stoves and chimneys in the nineteenth century.
