Santorini Island in the Aegean Sea is a part of a caldera formed by a major volcanic eruption around 1610 BC leaving a mostly submerged caldera twelve by seven kilometers wide with roughly 300 meter high steep cliffs at three sides. Nowadays at the top of this high walls picturesque towns with bright white houses like Fira are situated attracting a lot of tourism each year.
