The Mili Gorge near Rethymno in Northern Crete provides a pleasant walk through a landscape of abandoned villages and. water mills. The old settlements were first recorded in 1643 during the Venetian rule of Crete. There were approximately 30 water mills in the area. The last village was abandoned in 1972. One has been restored for visitors. There are several small churches in the Gorge.
