Birmingham UK 20th December, 2013. Over the weekend shoppers in their thousands attended the Birmingham German Christmas Market, in New Street, Centenary Square and Chamberlain Square. Officially known by the city council as Frankfurt Christmas Market, the seasonal shopping extravaganza is now the centrepiece of the city’s festive calendar. The last weekend before Christmas Day is thought to be the biggest retail weekend of the year. Retailers are trying hard to attract shoppers into the stores and get them spending.

The Birmingham German Christmas Market is the centrepiece of the region’s festive calendar - and a highlight in the annual events programme as a whole. Also called the Frankfurt Christmas Market, it attracts five million people a year. It is the largest Christmas market in the UK in terms of visitor numbers and the biggest outside Germany.
