Junk DNA, conceptual artwork. Scissors cutting segments from a molecule of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The cut segments are being collected in a glass. DNA contains sections called genes that encode the body's genetic information. Junk DNA is DNA that does not code for proteins or have any regulatory effect. However, this does not necessarily mean that it has no purpose, just that we don't understand what its purpose is. Approximately 95 per cent of the human genome is composed of junk DNA.
