Theworks are most conveniently situated, enabling the company to bringsteamers of 3,000 tons burden close to their stores, while a special sidingconnected with the three principal railways in Ireland, enables the manureto be loaded direct into railway waggons for delivery. The factory is con-nected by a private telephone wire with the offices of the firm, where thechairman and manager, Mr. W. J. Goulding, supported by a large staff ofofficials, directs the business of the company, both in Dublin, and itsbranches at Cork, Waterford, and Baltimore, , besides the agencies. Though, from the completeness of theirfactories, the work is largely performed by machineiy, the (irm give em-ployment to upwards of 300 hanils, and are by far the largest and mostimportant manure company in Ireland, and second to none in the UnitedKingdom. Messrs. Goulding were the first to send a cargo of manuresinto the United Stales, where a large and ever-increasing trade inchemical manures is now being done, and where the well-known Gould-ings manure still commands the first place in the markets. Comparedwith some other countries, the agriculture of Ireland is behind inscientific farming and the judicious use of chemical manures. In somemeasure this can be accounted for by the
