Third Stage.—The posterior surface of the muscle is laid bare in passingupwards towards the origin of the spinal accessory nerve, the external OPERATIONS ON THE NECK 173 branches of which are divided in succession, from below upwards, at theirentrance into the substance of the sterno-mastoid muscle.
