Optical image of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 which is a member of the Fornax cluster of galaxies in the Fornax constellation. NGC 1365 is an active galaxy and is classified as a Seyfert galaxy. Seyfert galaxies have a nucleus characterised by strong activity and its energy output may be of the same order of magnitude as that generated by quasars. NGC 1365 is the nearest example of the Seyfert galaxies. The nucleus of NGC 1365 is a powerful X-ray emitter. A small unidentified galaxy lies at top right.
