[By Sir Thomas Kirke Rose.] Deposiiion of Gold at Cathodes.—It is recommended byWohlwill that the proportion of gold present as chloride inthe bath should be 2| per cent, to 3 per cent., and strengthsof 3 per cent, to 7 per cent, are in use in America. The rateof deposition, however, may be increased if stronger solu-tions are used. It is generally considered desirable that thecathode deposit should be coherent to enable it to be washedreadily. At Ottawa, according to Entwistle, the deposit ofgold on the cathode at 500 amperes per sq. m. of surface isa black slime in cold solutions containing 5 per cent, ofgold, a yellow-coloured coherent sheet at 50 deg. atthe same current density. In the United States Mints acurrent density of 1,000 amperes in a cold solution with 7per cent, of gold appears to
