Canyons on Mars. Artwork of canyons of on Mars. Mars possesses vast canyon systems such as Valles Marineris, which is over 4000 kilometres (km) long, up to 200 km wide and up to 7 km deep, dwarfing the Grand Canyon of Arizona, USA. The canyons were originally created by faulting during volcanic activity. They have been further worn down by water, wind erosion, and slumping which has helped widen the valleys. The orange colour of the rocks is due to a high content of iron oxides.
