A successful lawyer and brilliant orator,he proved to he one of the most successful civilian generals of the war. In Grants ^■ campaign,Logans soldierly qualities came particularly into prominence. His division of McPhersons Corps dis-tinguished itself in the battle of Raymond, )|)i, and again at that of Champions Hill, whichsounded the knell of Vicksburg. It was Logans division that marched in on the Jackson road to takepossession of the fallen city, July 4, 1863. For his services in the cami)aign Logan was made a major-general.
