The image shows a large pile of bones at La Pauderie, a facility located 3 miles from Tours, Indre et Loire, France. This branch, under the supervision of Major Clinton G. Holden, manufactures hog food and fertilizer while reclaiming condemned oleo margarine and butter. In October 1918 alone, $227,000 was saved as a result of reclaiming bone waste and other by-products from the American Expeditionary Forces (). The bones and fat are collected from individual messes, transported to stations and then shipped to the Kitchen Economic Branch. Special trucks are used to transport the materials from the Tours station to the plant. The bones and meat are treated with live steam and sulphuric acid. This image was part of a collection known as "Photographs of American Military Activities during World War One."
