His sermons were es-teemed very highly for their depth both of thought and feeling,and their pure and elegant style, and several collections of themhave been published. George Ludwig Spalding, the philologist, was the second sonof the preceding, and was born at Barth, in 1762. He studied firstat a Berlin gymnasium, then directed by Busching, and after-wards at Gottingen and Halle. After traveling through the prin-cipal countries of Europe, he became tutor to the children ofPrince Ferdinand, and professor at a gymnasium of Berlin. Hewas M. A., Halle, and a member of the Berlin Academy of Sci-ences. In consequence of the Religious-Edict, he abandoned the-ology, and devoted the rest of his life to philology. He is chieflyremembered for his excellent edition of the works of Quintilianin five volumes. A
