Penetrating intothe sadly desecrated apartments in the towers and innerward, curiosity is still rewarded by glimpses of thesimple vaulting and stern, solid masonry characteristicof Norman architecture in other and distant lands. At Termoli, a little town on the coast of theAbruzzi, looking towards the Tremiti isles, is anotherstronghold of the all-conquering race. It is believed tohave been built by Count Robert of Loritello about themiddle of the eleventh century. Its square, coarselybuilt tower stands on the platform of an enormous base. THE CASTLE OF LERICI. FROM A PAINTING BY C. E. SOME SWABIAN AND NORMAN CASTLES 117 like a truncated pyramid, which on one side slopes downto the seashore. At each of the four angles of thisplatform is a turret of the bartizan type. In this castleTancred, the hero of Tassos epic, held his court in1156; and his name reminds us of another castle saidto have been built by him, a long way off. The Castleof Lerici on the beautiful Mediterranean shore, betweenSpezia and Viareggio, presents several points of re-semblance to Termoli. Here again we find the enormousplinth carried far down the sides of a promontory andthe great square keep, with another tower just in frontof it, apparently a later addition. There is a bartizanat the corner of this supporting tower. The onlyopenings are straight loops. There are traces ofdecoration on the outer wall of the keep by meansof arcade-work in red brick; and on the side towardsthe harbour the fabric is partly upheld by arches whichwere no doubt once filled in wit
