The Church of Agios Ioannis Therapon in Lesvos island, Greece
The largest church in Mytilini is Saint Therapon built in 1860, which is just behind the harbor road in the market. Supposedly the church sits on top of an ancient temple to Apollo. Both churches are full of Byzantine icons and impressive wood-carvings and gold. This church is dedicated to Saint John the Healer, and is standing near the pier of the town of Mytilene. It is a three-aisled basilica of an impressive architecture with neoclassical elements and architectural elements from the Renaissance. The church was built during the 19th century and houses a beautiful collection of fine icons.
