Tradition ascribes its originto the British king Lucius, about A. D. ISO; and could we found alegitimate conclusion on the dubious data developed by the fatuouslight of Welsh etymology, we should concur in the common the name of the place were really derived from Llan Taffi, i. e. thechurch on the Taff, it would sanction a presumptive argument in favourof its traditional antiquity : but, unfortunately, in the vague and evervarying orthography of the Welsh, the name is nearly as applicableto bishop Teliau1, Tileau, Taleu, &c. as to that of the river Taff, andmay be just as reasonably called the church of Teliau as the church onthe Taff. Nevertheless, it must he admitted that there are several cir-cumstances which contribute to confirm the ancient tradition, parti-cularly the dimensions
