Crucibles are small, conical-shaped vessels used by the dentistprincipally for the purpose of melting and refining metals usedfor plates, compounding metallic alloys, preparing and compound-ing the various ingredients employed in the manufacture ofporcelain teeth, continuous-gum work, etc. They combine in ahigh degree the properties of infusibility, exemption from theattack of substances fused in them, the power of resisting suddenalternations of temperature and impermeability to fluids andgases. The Hessian crucibles, which are in most common useamong dentists, are composed of silica, alumina, and oxid of iron. Fig.
