It is stated that this attempt to secure general opera-tion of the brakes on freight trains of the broad-gaugerailways has cost a vast amount of money, and so far ascan be seen no benefit has been secured in the way ofreduction in dead weight hauled, increased speed of op-eration, etc., for it has been found impossible to dispensewith the heavily-weighted brake-vans provided at the rearof trains to secure safety, owing to the liability of brokencouplings, the present screw devices being admittedlyweak and unreliable. Speeding up of the trains has not developed, owingto the want of automatic mechanical couplers, and theloss of time in attaching and detaching vehicles with thescrew device mentioned continues. It has been ascertainedthat to couple, with arrangements in the best of condition,the average time taken to couple and uncouple a train of 6vehicle
