[Vol. XXL No. i6. NEW POWER PLANS OF THE UNITED RAILWAYSOF SAN FRANCISCO It may be truthfully said that the light, power and street rail-way companies in the Far West were the pioneers in the useof high voltage alternating current. This may be accountedfor in various ways. Perhaps the most important reasonwas that many Western companies did not start to build theirplants until after the use of high voltage alternating currentshad been made a success, and therefore were not burdenedwith expensive direct-current and low-voltage equipment, which could not be disposed of to advantage. Again there isnot so much opposition to high voltage transmission lines in theWest as there is in the East. Furthermore, it is an undoubted ^1.
