Colton,'"' a traveling den- tist fresh out of medical college, while demonstrating some wonders of science like laughing gas and the Morse telegraph, made an electric motor that he added to his show. In 1847 Colton placed a recipro- cating motor, 14 inches long by 5 inches wide, on a track, and sent power from four Grove cells through the track.
