Wise is especially noted for its fine forests of valuable timber, such as poplar,walnut, cherry, oak, etc., but since it has been opened up to the markets by therailroads, and owing to heavy local demand, the supply of timber has been largelydepleted, though still a considerable quantity remains. The county is well watered in the northern part by the numerous streams flowinginto Russells fork of Big Sandy river, and in the southern and eastern portionsby Powells and Guests rivers, and other streams, tributaries of the 233 The manufacturing enterprises of note are iron furnaces and foundries, grist,saw and planing mills, a silicon brick plant, a large tannery, and an extract plantat Big Stone Gap. Climate healthful and invigorating, average temperaturefifty-five degrees, rainfall about fifty-four inches. Water fairly good. Countywell supplied with churches of the various denominations, and the public freeschools are in an exceedingly prosperous condition; also a model graded schoolat Big Stone Gap and a college at Wise, the county seat. Most of the towns areconnected by telephone, and mail service with every neighborhood. The financialcondition of the people is highly favorable, and great progress and advancementis noted here in recent years, as indicated by the large increase in population. Total population, census of 1910, 34,162. There are five banks in the county, all doing a prosperous business. Wise the county seat, is located near the center of the county, five miles
