This illustration shows a market in Goa, taken from Hugo Linschoten's "Navigation in the Orient," published in Frankfurt in 1599. Jan Huygen van Linschoten (1563-1611) a Dutchman born in Haarlem in 1563, traveled to Goa in 1583 as a clerk of the newly-appointed Portuguese Archbishop of Goa.
