CLASS: Aves ORDER: Falconiformes FAMILY: Accipitridae GENUS & SPECIES: Parabuteo unicinctus CLASSIFICATION: Accipiter is Latin for "hawk" and so is buteo. Para is Greek, meaning "near" or "beside" and indicates that Harris Hawks are a lot like buteos but not exactly. The species name is interesting, it means " a single, or complete (uni-) belt (cinctum). Girdled with what, except a uniform brown color, was not discovered. It was named in honor of Edward Harris, a friend of John Audubon. RANGE: Southwestern United States (eastward to near Louisiana) and south to southern Chile and central Argentina and Paraguay. In South America, it is only found in the grasslands like the Pampas. In the they prefer the semi-arid thorn shrub like mesquite and the Saguaro Cactus forests of the Sonoran and Chihuahua Deserts. They frequent watercourses and protected canyons.
