The island of Islay, and particularly the south-eastern end of it,lying so near Ireland, was one of the favourite routes by which in thesixth and seventh centuries the colonization of Western Scotland andthe Hebrides was accomplished. The whole district is strongly im-pressed with social and ecclesiastical features of the Celtic type. Thelanguage always bore the name of the colonists, and the ScottishGaelic or Erse of the present day is only a modern modificationof it. But the objects in Islay which cliiefiy interest Irish archaeologists arethe stone monuments and carved stone crosses, the characteristics ofwhich can be best studied in Kildalton grave-yard as a preliminary tothose of Oronsay, and lona, and elsewhere in the Hebrides.
