Preparing to split a stone block using the plug and feather method This is done by drilling the block of extracted stone with hollow tubes and then inserting plugs and feathers wedges The block can then be split into smaller pieces or sections This method originated at the end of the 19th Century Starting to cut a face for stone extraction. The engineers use an Arc Shearer Saw to cut a new heading corridor in the extraction of the Elm Park lime stone The stone is buff coloured oolitic limestone from the Great Oolite of Middle Jurasic Age. The quarry or mine is totally underground or subterranean. The excavated rock is used for various purposes including construction ornamentation restoration road house, building and in industrial raw materials such as concrete.
