Map/Print Case, late 1800s. America, probably New York City, 19th century. Mahogany and maple with bronze hardware; overall: x x cm (40 1/4 x 51 1/2 x 21 1/2 in.). This unusual piece of furniture was perhaps intended to house musical manuscripts, since lyres are included in the decoration of its hinges. It was probably made in the 1880s, when classicism was exerting itself in American architecture and the related art of furniture design.
