Monumental bronze statue created in 1906 by sculptor Oreste Calzolari (1852-1920) and now standing in Piazza Mino da Fiesole, the main square in Fiesole, a town above Florence, Tuscany, Italy. The statue depicts a meeting on 26 October 1860 which sealed the Unification of Italy. The meeting was held on a bridge at Teano in Campania, Italy and is known as the “Encounter at Teano”.
Fiesole, Tuscany, Italy: in Piazza Mino da Fiesole, monumental bronze equestrian statuary group, created in 1906 by the sculptor Oreste Calzolari (1852-1920). It depicts an historic meeting and handshake on horseback on 26 October 1860 that emphatically sealed the Unification of Italy. The meeting, now known as the Encounter at Teano, was between republican general and nationalist, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) (left), and King Vittorio Emanuele II (1820-1878). It took place on a bridge at Teano in Campania. Garibaldi was an Italian nationalist fighter and Victor Emanuel was King of Sardinia. Having wrested the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies from the Spanish Bourbons, Garibaldi shook Victor Emanuel’s hand and hailed him as King of Italy, thus sacrificing republican hopes for the sake of Italian unity under a monarchy. Calzolari’s sculpture of the meeting now stands before the Palazzo Pretorio or Town Hall in Piazza Mino in Fiesole, an ancient town high above the city of Florence. Fiesole was established as an Etruscan stronghold in the 700s BCE and then became a Roman town. In the 1300s it was a place where wealthy Florentines lived. Calzolari studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and then established a reputation nationally and internationally via exhibitions of his work.
