Carcinoma.—In 100 cases of carcinoma of the intestine, ninety-five percent occur in the large bowel. In 343 cases, 7 were in the duodenum, 10 in theileum, none in the jejunum, 104 in the colon, and 162 in the rectum. Fromthis it will be seen that over one-half of all carcinomata of the bowel occur inthe rectum. Above the rectum the sigmoid is most frecjuently involved. Thenfollow, in the order of frequency, the caecum, the splenic and hepatic flexures, and the descending colon, the transverse and the ascending portions of the colonbeing less often affected. Carcinoma of the intestine is usually primary and single. It may occur,. Fig. 288.—Insertion of Mesenteric Stitch which is Intended to ObUterate the Triangular Space. (F. G. Connell.) however, by direct extension from a neighboring organ; multiple developmentis rare. The male sex is more frec}uently attacked than the female. Carcinoma of the intestine occurs most frequently at the usual cancer age, viz., between the thirtieth and the fiftieth year; but a striking feature of can-cer in this location is the fact that it often occurs at a much earlier age thancancer elsewhere. Carcinoma of the large bowel is apparently one of the least malignant formsof the disease. The tumor usually produces a stenosis rather early. Ulcera-tion of the mucous surface may occur early or late. Perforation does not oftentake place. The tumor is of slow growth and metastasis generally occurs at alate stage of the disease. Infection of the related lymph nodes or of the liveralso occurs at a late stage. Extension through the intestinal wall to somestructure or organ in immediate c
