InSight lander on Mars. Cutaway illustration of NASA's InSight lander with its two main instruments deployed on the surface of Mars. These are the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS, lower left) and the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP3, lower right). SEIS is a seismometer to measure marsquakes. HP3 is a probe inserted into the ground to measure the planet's internal heat. The InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) lander is designed for studying the interior of Mars. It will investigate the processes that formed and shaped Mars and its findings will improve understanding of the evolution of the inner solar system's rocky planets. InSight was launched on 5 May 2018. It is scheduled to reach Mars in November 2018.
