Chacao Channel view of green cliffs, cafe palafitos and red vehicle-ferry at concrete vehicle ramp, Chacao, Chiloe Island, Chile

Vehicle ferries, every 30-35 minutes, provide access to Chiloe across the Canal de Chacao and across the Gulf of Corcovado, to Quellon, on the east side of the island. The journey from Pargua, on the mainland, to Chacao, on the northern tip of the island, takes some 40 minutes. Here we see a ferry moored at the concrete vehicle ramp at Chacao. A sign on the green cliffs welcomes visitors to Chiloe Island. Coastal dwellings, traditionally built on stilts, are known as 'palafitos'.
