The Atlantic andGulf coast were almost entirely in theGovernment possession and the Navywas prepared to strike its decisiveblow. Fort Fisher was now the mostimportant Confederate naval first attack took place in the nightof December twenty-third, when apowder-boat was exploded under thetowering walls of the old fort.
