An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Galileo Galilei and an illustration of his pendulum and a pendulum clock. A pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot that swings freely. The time for one complete cycle, a left swing and a right swing, is called the period. The period depends largely on the length of the pendulum. From the first scientific investigations of the pendulum around 1602 by Galileo, a pendulum was the world's most accurate timekeeping technology until the 1930s. Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaulti de Galilei (1564–1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer.

An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Galileo Galilei and an illustration of his pendulum and a pendulum clock. A pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot that swings freely. When a pendulum is displaced sideways from its resting position, it is subject to a restoring force due to gravity that will accelerate it back toward the original equilibrium position. The time for one complete cycle, a left swing and a right swing, is called the period. The period depends largely on the length of the pendulum. From the first scientific investigations of the pendulum around 1602 by Galileo, the regular motion of pendulums was the world's most accurate timekeeping technology until the 1930s. Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaulti de Galilei (1564–1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer. Pisa-based Galileo has been often called the 'father of modern science'. The pendulum clock invented by Christian Huygens in 1658 became the world's standard timekeeper. This card is from a 1929 set entitled 'Scientific Inventions and Discoveries' (35 cards in the series). The firm of R and J Hill Cigarettes was established on Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London in the 1700s. In the twentieth century the company issued cards with their Sunripe and Spinet Oval cigarettes. The firm expanded to include H Archer and Co and issued cards, like this set, under 'The Spinet House' brand. The company no longer exists.
