Fontainebleau, Entrance to the Principal Apartments of the Cour d’Honneur
The view taken in 1828, shows the Entrance to the Principal Apartments of the Cour d’Honneur. The original double staircase to the apartments was replaced by two staircases, l’Escalier du Roi and l’Escalier de la Reine. There is also a chapel erected by Francis I dedicated to the Virgin and St Saturnin by Thomas à Becket of Canterbury. The palace is situated in a forest region outside Paris. Its main features are credited to Francis I and the architect Prematiccio. Additional features were added by Henry IV, Louis XIII, Louis XIV and Louis XV. It contains four palaces and five courts. Napoleon spent vast resources on maintaining the palace and erected the Gallery of Diana. Henry III was born in the palace. Pope Pius VII lived in the palace and Napoleon abdicated in the palace. The image was drawn by B Ferry under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by J Tingle
