But discipline was alreadythreatened by another cause. The soldiers, unrestrained andeven encouraged by their officers,^ were revelling in the plunderof the citizens. The wonder is, not that Havelock was obligedto threaten with the punishment of death the very men whoseconduct in the field he had just enthusiastically praised, butthat he was able to shield Cawnpore from the atrocities thathad been inflicted upon the citizens of Badajoz.
